Looking to inject a little more romance into your boudoir and worried your partner won’t appreciate that life size portrait of Idris Elba/Emilia Clarke (whoever floats your boat) on the ceiling?  Sweet Rose Quartz is your ally.

Rose Quartz has been used in love rituals and ceremonies for centuries and remains the stone of the hopeless romantic (for good reason – crystals with aphrodisiac properties are great for igniting passion between lovers), but it’s not just romantic love that this crystal embodies.  The Rose Quartz stone’s meaning is one of unconditional love in any form.  Whether that be self-love, family, platonic or romantic love, the way Rose Quartz facilitates love is through its ability to bring your consciousness to a higher level.

The History of Rose Quartz

Rose Quartz has been used in love rituals and ceremonies for centuries. A stone for the love junkies and hopeless romantics, there are a number of legends surrounding this fanciful pink stone and its powers of love and reconciliation

In one Greek legend, Adonis, who was Aphrodite’s mortal lover, was attacked by Ares, who was rocking the body of a wild boar.  The Goddess of love, fearing for her Adonis, ran to his aid and in the process got herself caught on a thorn.   As he breathed his final breath, her blood mingled with Adonis’ and together it stained a piece of Clear Quartz pink.  Later Zeus took pity on the couple and brought Adonis back for six months every year, thus helping Rose Quartz become a symbol of love renewed.

In an Egyptian legend, Isis used Rose Quartz to maintain her divine youth and beauty (and where can I get some?)Reports tell that facial masks made of Rose Quartz have been found in the tombs of ancient Egypt, and it is believed that the ancients felt Rose Quartz would keep their complexions clear and prevent wrinkles.

Rose Quartz was also revered by ancient Tibetan and Chinese cultures, and some believe that this stone has been used as a token of love as early as 600 BC.

Recognising Rose Quartz

Rose Quartz is (believe it or not) a member of the Quartz family, which are made up of silicon dioxide.  Its sweet soft-pink colour comes from the many tiny inclusions of titanium, iron, or manganese, which are embedded within the glassy stone.  This also gives pretty Rose Quartz an opaque quality, which is why is should always be kept out of the sun to protect its lovely hue.

What is Rose Quartz used for?

Rose Quartz is, first and foremost, a love stone.  It is famous for attracting and keeping love, not just from others, but also for oneself by oneself.  It inspires compassion and appreciation, but it is also said to be beneficial in helping you heal your heart after loss or emotional anguish.

Rose Quartz can also soothe your emotions by generating balance in the heart chakra; its soft, feminine energy brings gentleness back into this energy centre. The moral of the story with sweet Rose Quartz is to align with the energy of love in all aspects of your life, so that you can do everything from a place of love.

Rose Quartz is a powerhouse at promoting unconditional love, and creating harmony in relationships already established.  Helping you to forgive and understand, Rose Quartz is strongly associated with the element of water, its healing properties are naturally fluid.  They wash out those toxic energies and emotions that threaten to weigh you down.

If married or already in a relationship, try placing a piece of Rose Quartz under your pillow.  See what happens.  Some say this stone will stimulate sexual imagination.  But be warned – if you’re planning on placing one in the bedroom for purely recreational purposes, Rose Quartz is also associated with the promotion of fertility.

It is also said that it helps ease pregnancy and childbirth.  And at the other end of life experiences, it is believed that Rose Quartz is of use to ease the transition when it’s the soul’s time to leave a dying body, helping to surround the person with unconditional love and cushion them with tenderness.  Rose Quartz is also helpful for those left grieving, as its emotional healing powers offer great comfort.

If you’re living your best life, your days will be filled with many and varied loves.  Rose Quartz will enable you to face every day with an open heart and stoke a fierce burning passion to take on the world and everything in it.
