Sunstone History, Folklore & Old Lore
Sunstone has not always been readily available.
According to the Gemological Institute of America, Sunstone was considered a relatively rare and costly gemstone in the early 1800s. Discoveries in places including Norway and Siberia eventually made it more widely known and accessible.
One of Sunstone’s best documented pieces of folklore comes from Oregon in the United States.
A Native American legend tells of a great warrior who was wounded by an arrow. Drops of his blood are said to have fallen onto pieces of Oregon Sunstone, colouring the stones red and carrying the warrior’s spirit into them. GIA records the story specifically as legend rather than historical fact, which is exactly how we think old crystal lore should be treated.
Oregon later developed a particularly strong connection with the gemstone. In 1987, Oregon Sunstone was officially designated the state gemstone.
What About the Famous Viking “Sunstone”?
This is where crystal lore gets especially interesting.
You may have heard that Vikings used “sunstones” to navigate across the ocean. That story does exist, but the Viking sunstone should not automatically be identified with the feldspar gemstone we call Sunstone today.
Historical and scientific research into Viking navigation has instead investigated highly birefringent minerals including transparent calcite, particularly Iceland spar. Researchers have demonstrated that such crystals could potentially reveal the position of the hidden sun by analysing polarised light.
So yes, Viking sunstones are fascinating.
No, your sparkly orange Sunstone palm stone was probably not steering a longship to Greenland.
The Science Behind Sunstone
Here comes the geology plot twist.
Sunstone is not actually one single mineral species.
It is a gemstone variety within the feldspar mineral group, and different Sunstones can belong to different types of feldspar.
Gem-quality Sunstone can occur in orthoclase as well as several plagioclase feldspars, including oligoclase and labradorite. This means there is no single chemical formula or crystal system that accurately describes every Sunstone.
And that famous sparkle?
It is called aventurescence.
Aventurescence occurs when flat reflective inclusions inside the feldspar bounce light back towards the viewer, producing flashes or a glittering metallic appearance.
Depending on where the Sunstone formed, these inclusions may contain minerals such as hematite or ilmenite, while Oregon Sunstone is particularly famous for inclusions of native copper.
Tiny inclusions can create a soft reddish or golden sheen. Larger platelets can produce much more dramatic flashes.
Basically, Mother Nature discovered glitter before we did.
Oregon Sunstone
Oregon Sunstone deserves its own little geological spotlight.
Unlike many Sunstones whose aventurescence comes from iron-bearing inclusions, Oregon Sunstone is a variety of plagioclase feldspar famous for native copper inclusions.
These copper particles can produce remarkable colours and optical effects, including peach, pink, orange, deep red, green and striking red-green combinations.
Not every Oregon Sunstone contains obvious glitter either.
“Sunstone” is now used in the gem trade for several Oregon copper-bearing feldspars, including material whose beauty comes more from colour and pleochroism than visible aventurescence.

From a mineral-care perspective, Sunstone deserves a little respect.
Feldspars have cleavage planes that make them more vulnerable to knocks than their hardness number alone might suggest. GIA rates Sunstone around 6.5 to 7.2 on the Mohs scale and recommends warm, soapy water for physical cleaning. Steam and ultrasonic cleaners should be avoided. Excessive heat is also not recommended.
So while Sunstone is perfectly capable of surviving normal handling, this is not the crystal to yeet into the bottom of your handbag with keys, coins and several unidentified receipts.
