Seftonite isn’t a separate mineral species. Mindat describes it as a moss-green variety of chalcedony, while retailers also use the name for red-patched material sold as African Bloodstone. The name’s usage varies, so it doesn’t guarantee one exact mineral mixture. 

Chalcedony is made of microscopic quartz crystals and typically measures 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale. In classic bloodstone, red markings come from iron-oxide inclusions such as hematite. Claims that every Seftonite specimen contains pyrite shouldn’t be treated as established without testing.
