Vivianite is hydrated iron phosphate — chemical formula Fe₃(PO₄)₂·8H₂O — and crystallises in the monoclinic system. Fresh crystals can be colourless to very pale; exposure to light and air oxidises iron(II) to iron(III), turning the mineral deep blue to blue-green, then progressively darker over time. It is soft (about 1.5–2 on Mohs) and often forms in peat bogs, clays, fossil bones and shells — historically called “blue iron earth” and occasionally used as a pigment, though it darkens with light.
