Pendulums for Beginners | How to use a Pendulum

First up – WTF is a pendulum?

A Crystal Pendulum is an ancient tool for dowsing.

Okay sure, but what actually is it?  Like how do I recognise one?

To look at – it’s a crystal shaped like a point, dangling at the end of a string, chain, or rope.

In more detail, a pendulum is a tool used for spiritual healing and inner growth. When you hold your pendulum it will swing back/forth/or in a circle, which is how you get your answers (patience – we will get to this!).

So what exactly is dowsing?  And how do I use it to get answers?

There are plenty of methods to dowsing, but most include forging a connection to your pendulum and straight up asking it questions. The belief is that when working with a pendulum, you are really just asking questions of your higher self.

Use our step-by-step guide below to get your dowse on.

STEP 1:

First thing’s first, cleanse your pendulum as soon as you get it.  We always recommend cleansing any crystal when you first get your hands on it – you never know how many people have handled it or touched it, or what sort of bad juju they might have left lingering on your shiny new rock.

STEP 2:

Ground yourself.

Sit down, feet on the ground and simply breathe with the intention of letting the stress float away.  Alternatively, make it more of a ritual by lighting candles, putting on some Zen tunes, or diffusing essential oils.  Whatever you do, make sure to relax.  The point is to quiet your mind, so you’ll be able to forge that connection with your higher self.

STEP 3:

Connect to the pendulum.

Hold the pendulum in your fist and let it absorb your energy.  Take a look at it. Respect it.  Connect with it.

STEP 4:

Now that you’re grounded and ready to roll, you need to learn your body’s “yes” and “no” responses.  To establish this, hold the pendulum 15-20cm above the palm of your hand and ask it some basic yes/no questions that you already know the answers to and see what the responses are.

Try something like “Am I __ years old?”  “Is my name <<insert your name here>>?”

It may swing for yes, and circle for no - Take note of the responses.

STEP 5:

Now that you know which direction means yes and which direction means no, it’s time to ask the real questions – remember the pendulum can only answer yes or no so your questions have to be in a yes/no format.

And that’s all there is to it.

Okay, so how do I choose a pendulum?

The wand chooses the wizard Harry.

You don’t choose a pendulum.  It chooses you.  It’s a simple matter of energy and using your intuition.  If a particular pendulum or crystal catches your eye and something about it just feels right – that’s the one for you.  What sparks your interest the most?  Which glimmers and first catches your eye?  Whichever it is, trust that is the stone you’re being called to work with.

No overthinking.  No second-guessing.

Happy dowsing.
