Moonstone is a feldspar made of intergrown orthoclase and albite. As it cools, ultra-thin layers form; light scattering between them creates adularescence (that floating moon-glow). Dark body colour in “black” moonstone comes from fine inclusions within the feldspar that give the stone its smoky to charcoal tone. Feldspar has perfect cleavage and sits around 6–6.5 on the Mohs scale, so handle polished pieces with care.
