Scientific Fun Fact
Despite its name, Rainbow Moonstone is generally light-coloured labradorite, a plagioclase feldspar, rather than the orthoclase-based material traditionally called moonstone. The trade name is established, but the mineral distinction matters. Related family, different identity. GIA’s explanation.
Its flashes come from light interacting with microscopic internal feldspar layers. The effect changes with the lighting and viewing angle, so a stone may look quiet in one position and spectacular in another. Not every specimen displays every rainbow colour. GIA’s optical research.
Labradorite crystallises in the triclinic system and measures 6–6.5 on the Mohs scale. It also has cleavage, so resistance to scratching does not make it knock-proof. Mineral data.
