Amazonite is a blue-green variety of microcline, a potassium feldspar with the chemical formula KAlSi₃O₈. Despite sometimes being called “Amazon Jade”, it isn’t jade or turquoise.
Many specimens display pale streaks or fine grid-like patterns caused by intergrowths with albite, another feldspar. That’s mineral teamwork on a microscopic scale.
Its hardness is approximately 6–6.5 on the Mohs scale, but hardness isn’t the same as toughness. Amazonite has distinct cleavage directions along which it can split, so that gorgeous polished finish still deserves protection from knocks.
