Pink Opal

PEACE          ROMANCE          EMPATHY

Oh, Pink Opal.  How do we love thee?  Let us count the ways.

Sweet Pink Opal is a powerful ally for emotional healing, emotional balance and all healing matters of the heart.  Getting over a bad breakup?  Or loss of a loved one?  The gentle tingle of Pink Opal placed over our hearts or under our pillow connects us to that vibrating flow of energy that in turn connects us to everything and everyone we love, bringing resolution to painful energies and filling your aura with a sweet pink cloud of peace.

The History of Pink Opal

The significance of Pink Opal throughout history cannot be overstated.  It has played a pivotal role in various societies since time immemorial, most notably in Egypt.  Also called the Hope Stone, the ancient Egyptians crowned their Pharaohs with Pink Opal before they undertook massive works of conquest and construction.  Believing it to be the “blessing drop of the Gods”, the stone symbolised instant achievement and good fortune.

Pink Opal was also used in ancient Roman politics. Political officials wore Pink Opal jewellery to make sure romantic entanglements didn't get in the way of political proceedings, since Romans believed Pink Opal could calm or neutralise emotions.

Not to mention, even in the west, Pink Opal was revered as sacred by indigenous people in the Americas, as one of the seven sacred gemstones of the Cherokee tribes and by Inca communities in South America as a means to communicate with deities or spirits, particularly Pachamama, the Mother Goddess.

Recognising Pink Opal

Pink Opal forms as water evaporates from silica, leaving a gel behind that eventually hardens into Opal (much like any other Opal formation). Depending on where it forms, the pink appears in a different way.

Mexican and Peruvian Pink Opals get their colour from small traces of quinones, organic compounds often found in plants, that enter the stone during formation. American and Australian pink opals get their colour from the presence of manganese.

Pink Opals rang in hue from pastel pink to bubble gum pink, with other colours frequently displayed in colour zones or streaks.

Pink Opal has a hardness of 5-6 on the Mohs scale.

What is Pink Opal used for?

In addition to healing matters of the heart, blushing Pink Opal’s superpower lies in allowing you to be more empathetic.  Empathy is a two-part process. It requires you to both understand someone else’s feelings and to share in them.  Pink Opal shifts the focus from yourself to another so you can learn to acknowledge someone else’s struggle or difficult situation, in addition to balancing your own emotions.  It encourages the release of fear, worry and anxiety and helps to dissipate stress, allowing the bearer to be more centred and calm.

As an added benefit of working with Pink Opal to practice empathy toward others, you will learn to be more empathetic with yourself. Self-empathy is a must for developing a positive and loving relationship with yourself and it can be hard to focus on your hopes for the future when you’re bogged down with worries or emotional wounds that need attention.  If this sounds like you, Pink Opal has got your back.

So, if you often find yourself feeling nervous or hopeless for no reason (and let’s be honest, who doesn’t in this day and age?), try carrying your Pink Opal with Rose Quartz, Blue Lace Agate or other calming crystals to soothe your frazzled nerves.
