“Apatite” refers to a mineral group, rather than one single mineral species. Blue material sold as Apatite is commonly fluorapatite, a calcium phosphate with the formula Ca₅(PO₄)₃F.
Apatite is also the reference mineral for 5 on the Mohs hardness scale. That makes it softer than quartz and, combined with its brittleness, more vulnerable to scratches and knocks than its polished appearance might suggest.
Some blue and blue-green gem material is heat-treated to improve its colour. Treatment should be disclosed; a vivid shade alone doesn’t establish whether a particular piece has been treated.
