Polychrome means “many colours”, and this trade name describes multicoloured jasper rather than a separate mineral species. Jasper is an opaque, quartz-rich material made from extremely small crystals, with other mineral components contributing colour and pattern.
Iron oxides help produce many of its red, yellow and brown tones. Differences in mineral distribution create the contrasting patches and flowing designs that make polished pieces so distinctive. Those landscape-like patterns are natural mineral arrangements, not actual miniature sand dunes trapped inside.
Its quartz component belongs to the trigonal crystal system, and hardness is generally around 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale. It takes a lovely polish, although hardness is no guarantee against chips from a hard knock.
