Carnelian is a variety of Chalcedony, the microcrystalline form of Quartz, composed primarily of silicon dioxide (SiO₂).

Its orange, red and rusty colouring comes primarily from iron oxides distributed throughout the stone. Heat can deepen these colours, and heating has been used since antiquity to enhance the appearance of Carnelian.

Carnelian can sometimes be confused with Sard, another reddish-brown variety of Chalcedony. There isn't a perfectly sharp mineralogical boundary between them, but Carnelian is generally brighter orange to red, while Sard tends towards darker brownish-red tones.

Old Lore & Magic

Carnelian has one seriously impressive résumé.

It was treasured in Ancient Egypt, where it was used in jewellery, amulets and funerary objects. Its fiery colouring became associated with vitality, protection and divine power, and Carnelian pieces have been recovered from numerous ancient Egyptian sites.

The stone was also widely used throughout the ancient Mediterranean and Near East for seals and signet rings. Its hardness allowed intricate designs to be carved into it, while hot sealing wax was less likely to stick to its smooth surface.

In later magical and folkloric traditions, Carnelian became associated with courage, protection, eloquence and success, particularly when confidence or decisive action was required.
